Transdisciplinary artist and researcher Ivan Henriques will present Waterbike. This ‘bio-machine’ was specifically designed as an ecosystem for bacteria to feed on organic materials found in water, which is one of the leading causes of water pollution.

Talk by Teresa van Dongen

Teresa van Dongen will present Spark of Life, a lamp that emits light without the need of an external energy source. The lamp employs electrochemically active bacteria, which emit small electrical currents through their metabolism while cleaning waste water.

Food designer Chloé Rutzerveld will present Strooop!, entirely plant-based ‘stroopwafel’ biscuits. The project emerged from an exploration into innovative ways of working with by-products of the vegetable industry.

Talk by Elejan van der Velde

Artist Elejan van der Velde will present Imprint, an unexecuted proposal that he developed during a residency in Moscow. Van der Velde proposes a four-centimetre elevation of the asphalt at the original location of the Sukharev Tower, which was one of Moscow’s best-known landmarks until its destruction by the Soviet authorities in 1934.

Alessandra Covini will present Petrified Carpets, an installation of concrete objects inspired by Persian carpets. The installation evokes an experience reminiscent of the garden as a paradise on earth.

Eric Schrijver

With Legal Advice for Artists, Eric Schrijver encourages artists and designers to take part in discussions about copyright and its implications for the creative process. Schrijver will discuss the aims of his upcoming publication and share its first chapter, ‘No Known Restrictions: The Public Domain’. He will be joined by a lobbyist and by legal scholar Julien Cabay, who are both closely familiar with the way copyright law is sculpted.

Paralysis (research)
Film Screening by Karel van Laere

On Saturday, November 21st 2015 at 6:00 pm, performer and filmmaker Karel van Laere began the preliminary survey research for his short film Largo. Largo combines images of a body being towed through various landscapes with a soundtrack consisting of interviews with people who are fully paralysed.

In order to experience full paralysis himself, Van Laere was fastened onto a table and lay motionless for 24 hours.

S†ëfan Schäfer and Dr. Emily West will launch their print publication I am Become Digital Death, the Destroyer of Worlds and its digital afterlife digitalnecropolis.net. They will talk about their research on digital death, the making of and the aims of this publication, and the relation between the publication and its digital version as a continuing research platform.

Area C, System D: Dealings Along the Jerusalem-Ramallah Road

Following the screening, Medvedeva and writer/journalist Chris Keulemans will discuss the film and its topic, the informal structures of Area C in the West Bank territory.

Area C, System D was filmed over the course of a year in Al-Ram and Kufr Aqab, and at the Qalandia, Al Amari and Kaddoura refugee camps in Palestine. The documentary depicts the informal socio-political structures of these locations, which remain ungovernable by both Palestinian and Israeli authorities.

Symposium and book launch of The Responsible Object: A History of Design Ideology for the Future with Susan R. Henderson, Ed van Hinte, Jesse Howard and Marjanne van Helvert, moderated by Saskia van Stein.

What is the responsibility of the designer regarding the wicked problems of today? How did the role of the designer evolve through the century within changing political contexts? On the occasion of the publication of the book The Responsible Object: A History of Design Ideology for the Future, editor Marjanne van Helvert invites designers and design thinkers to talk about the contributions of socially committed designers of the past, and discuss what their ideas could mean for social and sustainable design in the present.
