Flags of the United Oceans

Enzo Pérès-Labourdette studied Communication Design specialising in Illustration. Flags often signify solidarity among people.

This project questions why there are not similar means to express solidarity with the environment, especially when it is subjected to harm caused by humans. How can we signify our grief for the damage to the ocean caused by pollution and express solidarity with the animal species and small human coastal communities this affects?

In collaboration with Mission Blue, an initiative of marine biologist Sylvia Earle, Pérès-Labourdette created a series of 12 flags that commemorate ‘hope spots’. Mission Blue has nominated these locations all over the globe as special places critical to the oceans’ health.

The Flags of the United Oceans project aims to recognise these places as areas that should have rights similar to those inhabited by humans.
